Akumal Official Guide
Akumal is a small beach-front tourist resort community 62 miles south of Cancun International Airport; this town is located between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The name of Akumal means "place of the turtles" in the Mayan language. The town was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers. The fine white sandy beaches at Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Sea turtles can be found in Akumal laying eggs on the beaches at night throughout the nesting season (end of April to October) or swimming in the main bay during the day. Sea turtles are endangered species and are protected by federal law.
Akumal has several activities such as swimming and ecological explorations and of course Akumal is known for its amazing scuba diving. The Mesoamerican Coral Reef stretches over 600 miles from the northern tip of Cancun, south to the islands of Honduras. Explore underground cenotes or cave diving. Akumal has five of the largest water filled cave systems in the world.
Akumal is a small town that offers a secluded and relaxing vacation. Akumal offers a good escape from the busy tourist’s resort of Cancun. There are several vacation rentals, villas and also bed and breakfasts located on the Caribbean Coast.
